An electric bell is a common device that uses the principle of electromagnetism to produce sound. When the circuit is switched on, current flows through a coil wound around a soft iron core, magnetising it and attracting a nearby iron strip (the armature), which causes a hammer to strike a gong and produce a sound. As the armature moves, it breaks contact with a screw, interrupting the current flow, which demagnetises the core and allows the armature to spring back, re-establishing contact. This cycle repeats rapidly, causing the bell to ring continuously as long as the circuit remains switched on.
