Q9. A student balances H₂ + O₂ → H₂O as H₂ + O₂ → H₂O. Identify the error and correct it.
6 Marks
Error: Hydrogen atoms: Left = 2
Right = 2 Oxygen atoms: Left = 2
Right = 1 Therefore oxygen is not balanced. Put 2 before H₂O:
H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
Now H becomes 4 on right. Therefore put 2 before H₂:
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
Final equation is balanced.
Q10. Write a complete CBSE-style answer explaining why a chemical equation must always be balanced.
6 Marks
Model CBSE Answer: A chemical equation must always be balanced because it represents a chemical reaction in which atoms are neither created nor destroyed. According to the law of conservation of mass, the total number of atoms of each element must remain unchanged. Therefore the number of atoms of every element on the reactant side must equal the number on the product side. For example:
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
Here H = 4 and O = 2 on both sides. Hence the equation is balanced and obeys the law of conservation of mass.
