1. Introduction |
In a domestic electrical circuit, three important wires are commonly used:
Live Wire, Neutral Wire and Earth Wire.
These wires have different functions and are essential for the safe operation of electrical appliances.

Important: Wire colours can vary in older installations and different standards.
Never identify a wire by colour alone. Proper testing and electrical standards should be followed.
3. Live Wire |
What is a Live Wire?
The live wire is the conductor that carries the electrical potential from the supply system towards the electrical appliance.
It is also called phase wire.
It is normally at a dangerous potential relative to earth.
It supplies energy to electrical appliances.
The switch and fuse are generally placed in the live conductor.
⚠️ Safety: The live wire can cause a dangerous electric shock.
Never touch it directly, even if you think the appliance is switched off.
4. Neutral Wire |
What is a Neutral Wire?
The neutral wire provides the return path for current from the appliance to the supply system under normal conditions.
It is normally connected to the neutral point of the supply system.
It completes the circuit with the live conductor.
It is generally close to earth potential at the supply reference point.
Important: Neutral should not automatically be considered completely safe.
Faults, incorrect wiring or other conditions can make a neutral conductor hazardous.
5. Earth Wire |
What is an Earth Wire?
The earth wire is a protective conductor connected to exposed conductive parts of suitable electrical appliances and to the earthing system.
Its major purpose is to provide a low-resistance path for fault current, helping protective devices operate and reducing the risk of electric shock.
Concept: Live supplies the appliance, neutral completes the normal circuit, while earth provides a protective path during faults.
7. Normal Current Path |

Key Point:
Under normal operation, the earth wire is not intended to carry the normal operating current of the appliance.
8. What Happens During a Fault? | Fault
Suppose the live wire accidentally touches the metal body of an earthed appliance.
The metal body can become dangerous if there is no effective protective arrangement.
With proper earthing, a low-resistance fault-current path is available. A sufficiently large fault current can cause a fuse to melt or an MCB/RCD-type protective device to operate, depending on the installation.

9. Why is the Switch Connected in Live Wire?
The switch is placed in the live conductor so that opening the switch disconnects the appliance from the live supply.
This reduces the chance that internal parts remain connected to the live potential when the appliance is switched off.
Exam Point:
Switch and fuse are normally connected in the live wire, not the earth wire.
10. Why is Fuse Connected in Live Wire?
A fuse is a protective device. When excessive current flows, the fuse element heats up and melts.
If the fuse is in the live conductor, melting it disconnects the appliance from the live supply.
H = I²Rt
This is the heating effect of electric current.

13. Which Appliances Need Earthing?
Earthing is especially important for appliances having an accessible conductive metal body, such as many:
Washing machines
Refrigerators
Microwave ovens
Metal-bodied water heaters
Computers and other equipment where protective earthing is specified
Other Class I electrical appliances
The exact protection arrangement depends on appliance design and applicable electrical standards.
14. Advantages of Earthing | Earthing
Reduces electric shock risk.
Provides a low-resistance fault-current path.
Helps protective devices operate during faults.
Keeps exposed metal parts near earth potential under fault conditions.
Improves electrical safety.
15. Earth Wire is NOT the Same as Neutral Wire
Do not confuse them.
Neutral is part of the normal current path.
Earth is primarily a protective conductor and is intended to carry fault current when required.
16. Potential Difference and Domestic Supply
Voltage is the potential difference between two points.
In a typical domestic supply, the voltage between live and neutral is much greater than zero and is hazardous.
V = W / Q
Where:
V = potential difference in volt
W = work done in joule
Q = charge in coulomb
For Indian domestic supply, the nominal voltage is commonly around 230 V AC, with actual values subject to supply conditions and applicable standards.
17. Electrical Safety Rules |
Never touch electrical appliances with wet hands.
Never touch exposed wires.
Do not overload sockets or extension boards.
Use correctly rated fuse/MCB/protection devices.
Ensure proper earthing of appliances requiring protective earthing.
Switch off and isolate the supply before repair.
Do not replace a fuse with thick copper wire.
Keep children away from electrical sockets and exposed wiring.
Do not use damaged plugs, cables or sockets.
Get electrical faults checked by a qualified electrician.
18. Common Mistakes |
Wrong Practice
Why Dangerous?
Connecting fuse in neutral instead of live
Appliance may remain connected to live potential even after fuse operation.
Using copper wire instead of fuse wire
Protection may fail during excessive current.
Ignoring earthing
Fault current may not get an effective protective path.
Overloading socket
Can cause excessive current, heating and fire risk.
Touching appliance with wet hands
Water can reduce body resistance and increase shock risk.

Neutral provides the return path for current from the appliance to the supply system during normal operation.
2 MarksQ3. What is an earth wire?
Earth is a protective conductor that provides a low-resistance path for fault current and helps reduce electric-shock risk.
2 MarksQ4. Write the symbols of live, neutral and earth.
Live = L, Neutral = N, Earth = E.
2 MarksQ5. Why is earthing necessary?
Earthing provides a protective path for fault current and helps keep exposed metal parts near earth potential.
2 MarksQ6. What is the normal function of the neutral wire?
It provides the return path for current in a normal working circuit.
3 MarksQ7. Give three differences between live and neutral wires.
Live supplies electrical potential; neutral provides the return path. Live is normally at hazardous potential relative to earth; neutral is normally near the supply reference potential. Switch/fuse are placed in live, not normally in neutral.
3 MarksQ8. Give three functions of an earth wire.
It provides a fault-current path, reduces shock risk and helps protective devices operate during electrical faults.
3 MarksQ9. Why is the fuse placed in the live wire?
If excessive current occurs, the fuse melts and disconnects the appliance from the live supply. This gives better protection than placing the fuse only in neutral.
3 MarksQ10. Why is a switch connected in the live wire?
Opening the switch in the live conductor disconnects the appliance from the live supply, improving safety during use and maintenance.
3 MarksQ11. Why should wet hands not be used to operate electrical appliances?
Water can reduce the electrical resistance of the skin, increasing current through the body and hence increasing electric-shock risk.
3 MarksQ12. What is meant by a three-pin plug?
A three-pin plug provides connections for live, neutral and earth conductors, with the earth connection serving a protective function.
4 MarksQ13. Explain the roles of live, neutral and earth wires.
Live supplies electrical potential, neutral provides the normal return path, and earth provides a protective fault-current path. Live and neutral normally carry the appliance's operating current; earth normally does not.
4 MarksQ14. Explain how earthing can reduce electric-shock risk.
If live touches an earthed metal body, fault current can flow through the low-resistance earth path. The resulting fault current can operate protective devices, reducing the time for which the body remains dangerous.
4 MarksQ15. Differentiate between neutral and earth.
Neutral is part of the normal circuit and carries return current. Earth is mainly a protective conductor and carries fault current when required. Neutral completes normal operation; earth helps protect people and equipment during faults.
4 MarksQ16. Explain why fuse and switch are connected in live wire.
Both are placed in live so that switching or fuse operation disconnects the appliance from the live potential. This improves safety and ensures effective protection.
4 MarksQ17. What happens if live wire touches the metal body of an earthed appliance?
A fault current flows through the earth path. If the earthing and protective devices are effective, sufficient current can cause the fuse/MCB or another protective device to disconnect the circuit.
5 MarksQ18. Draw and explain a simple domestic circuit containing live, neutral and earth wires.
The live wire passes through the protective device/switch to the appliance. The appliance returns current through neutral. The metal body is connected to earth so that a fault can produce a protective fault-current path.
5 MarksQ19. Explain the importance of a three-pin plug.
It provides live and neutral connections for normal operation and an earth connection for protection. The earth connection is particularly important for appliances with exposed conductive metal parts.
5 MarksQ20. Explain the danger of incorrect domestic wiring.
Incorrect wiring can expose people to live potential, prevent protective devices from operating correctly, defeat earthing protection, cause overheating and increase fire or shock risk.
5 MarksQ21. Why should an ordinary copper wire not be used instead of a fuse wire?
A properly rated fuse is designed to melt when excessive current flows. A thick copper wire may carry excessive current without melting, defeating the protective function and creating overheating or fire risk.
6 MarksQ22. Explain the complete function of live, neutral and earth wires in a domestic circuit.
Live delivers electrical potential to the appliance. Neutral completes the normal working circuit by providing a return path. Earth connects exposed conductive parts to the protective earthing system. During a fault, earth provides a low-resistance path for fault current, helping protective devices operate and reducing shock risk.
6 MarksQ23. Explain the importance of earthing with an example.
Consider a metal-bodied appliance whose insulation fails and live conductor touches the body. Without effective earthing, the body can become dangerous. With earthing, fault current gets a low-resistance path and protective devices can operate, reducing the danger.
6 MarksQ24. Explain why switch and fuse should not be placed in earth wire.
Earth is a protective path. Breaking or disconnecting it can remove the protection while the appliance may remain connected to live supply. Therefore protective switching and fusing are normally arranged in the live conductor.
6 MarksQ25. Explain the difference between normal current path and fault-current path.
Normal current flows through live → appliance → neutral. During a fault involving exposed metal and protective earthing, fault current can flow through live → fault point → earth conductor → protective system, allowing protective devices to disconnect the circuit.
6 MarksQ26. Explain five electrical safety rules.
Avoid wet hands, do not overload sockets, never touch exposed wires, use correct protection and earthing, and isolate the electrical supply before repairs. Damaged cables and plugs should be replaced.
6 MarksQ27. Why is neutral not considered a replacement for earth?
Neutral is a normal current-carrying conductor, whereas earth is a protective conductor. Their functions, wiring arrangements and safety purposes are different. A fault in the neutral or incorrect wiring can make it hazardous.
6 MarksQ28. Explain the importance of correct polarity in domestic wiring.
Correct polarity ensures that switches and protective devices disconnect the live conductor as intended. Incorrect polarity can leave parts of an appliance connected to dangerous live potential even when the switch appears to be off.
6 MarksQ29. What precautions should be taken before repairing an electrical appliance?
Switch off and isolate the supply, verify that the circuit is de-energised using appropriate equipment, avoid wet conditions, use suitable insulated tools, and have work performed by a qualified person where required.
6 MarksQ30. Write a detailed note on domestic electrical safety.
Domestic safety requires correct live-neutral-earth wiring, proper earthing, suitable fuse/MCB/RCD protection, avoiding overloading, keeping water away, replacing damaged cables, not touching exposed conductors, and isolating the supply before maintenance.
21. Assertion–Reason Questions
Q1. Assertion: The switch is normally connected in the live wire.

Answer: Both Assertion and Reason are true, and Reason correctly explains the Assertion.
Q2. Assertion: Earth wire normally carries the working current of an appliance.
Reason: Earth wire is mainly a protective conductor.
Answer: Assertion is false, but Reason is true.
Q3. Assertion: Fuse is normally placed in the live wire.
Reason: A blown fuse should disconnect the appliance from the live supply.
Answer: Both are true, and Reason correctly explains the Assertion.
Q4. Assertion: Earthing helps reduce electric-shock risk.
Reason: It provides a protective path for fault current.
Answer: Both are true, and Reason correctly explains the Assertion.
22. HOTS / Application-Based Questions
HOTS 1:
Why is it dangerous if a metal-bodied appliance is not properly earthed and its live conductor touches the metal body?
The body can become electrically live. A person touching it may provide a path to earth and receive an electric shock. Proper earthing provides a protective fault-current path and helps protective devices disconnect the circuit.
HOTS 2:
A student says, “Neutral and earth are both connected to ground, so they are the same wire.” Is this correct?
No. Their functions are different. Neutral is a normal current-carrying conductor, while earth is primarily a protective conductor. Their connections and purposes must follow the applicable electrical installation standards.
HOTS 3:
Why does placing a switch only in the neutral conductor create a safety concern?
The appliance can remain connected to the live conductor even when the switch is open. Internal parts may therefore remain at dangerous potential.
