1. What is Gypsum?
Gypsum is a soft, naturally occurring mineral. Chemically, it is hydrated calcium sulphate, written as CaSO₄·2H₂O
(calcium sulphate dihydrate). The formula shows that two molecules of water are chemically combined with each calcium sulphate unit — this bound water is called the "water of crystallization".Gypsum is mined from sedimentary rock deposits
and is the raw material from which Plaster of Paris, cement, and fertilisers
are manufactured. It is a key topic under the chapter "Chemical Reactions
and Equations / Acids, Bases and Salts" in CBSE Class 10 Science.
2. Heating Gypsum at 373 K — The
Key Reaction
When gypsum is heated to exactly 373 K
(100°C), it loses three-fourths of its water of crystallization and converts
into a white powder called Plaster of Paris (POP) — calcium sulphate
hemihydrate, CaSO₄·½H₂O.
CaSO₄·2H₂O →(Heat, 373 K)→ CaSO₄·½H₂O + 1½ H₂O ↑
Fig. 1 — Gypsum converts to Plaster of Paris on heating at 373 K
•
The
reaction is reversible and mildly exothermic when it sets back.
•
Heating
exactly at 373 K is critical: this is the temperature at which POP is correctly
formed.
•
If gypsum
(or POP) is heated well above 373 K, ALL the water of crystallization is lost,
forming anhydrous CaSO₄, called
"dead burnt plaster." This form does NOT set with water and is
chemically unreactive — hence it is of no use in construction.
3. Setting of Plaster of Paris
(Reverse Reaction)
When Plaster of Paris is mixed with water, it
slowly absorbs water and re-forms gypsum, hardening into a solid mass. This is
why POP is stored in moisture-proof containers — even atmospheric moisture can
trigger the same reaction and spoil the powder.
CaSO₄·½H₂O + 1½ H₂O → CaSO₄·2H₂O (hard
solid)

•
Making
smooth, decorative surfaces and false ceilings in construction.
•
Preparing
moulds for dentistry and sculpture work.
•
Manufacturing
chalk sticks and fire-resistant building products.
6. Quick Revision Points (Board
Exam Focused)
•
Gypsum =
CaSO₄·2H₂O; Plaster of Paris = CaSO₄·½H₂O.
•
Correct
heating temperature = 373 K (100°C) — a favourite fill-in-the-blank / MCQ.
•
Overheating
beyond 373 K → dead burnt plaster (CaSO₄, no water of crystallization, does not set).
•
POP +
water → gypsum (sets hard); this is why it must be kept dry.
•
This
concept links to the broader topic of "water of crystallization",
also seen in blue copper sulphate crystals (CuSO₄·5H₂O).
CaSO₄·2H₂O →(गर्म करने पर, 373 K)→ CaSO₄·½H₂O + 1½ H₂O ↑
•
CaSO₄·½H₂O + 1½ H₂O → CaSO₄·2H₂O (कठोर ठोस)
