🔵 What is Lanthanoid Contraction?
Lanthanoid contraction is the gradual decrease in the atomic
and ionic radii of the lanthanoid elements from La to Lu
with increasing atomic number.
La → Ce → Pr → ... → Lu
Atomic / ionic size gradually decreases ⬇️
The main reason for this contraction is the poor shielding effect of
the 4f electrons. As the atomic number increases, electrons are
added to the 4f subshell. These 4f electrons do not shield the outer
electrons effectively from the increasing nuclear charge.
⚛️ Why Does Lanthanoid Contraction Occur?
Across the lanthanoid series, the atomic number increases.
Electrons are progressively added to the 4f subshell.
4f electrons have a poor shielding effect.
The effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer electrons therefore increases.
The electron cloud is pulled closer to the nucleus.
Consequently, atomic and ionic radii gradually decrease.
One of the most important consequences of lanthanoid contraction is that
the elements of the 5d transition series have atomic and
ionic radii very similar to their corresponding elements of the
4d series.
Normally, elements in the 5d series should be considerably larger than the
corresponding 4d elements because the 5d elements have an additional
principal shell. However, the lanthanoid contraction offsets much of this
expected increase in size.
