Class 10 CBSE Science
1️⃣ Description /
English
Reactions in which heat is given out along with the products are called exothermic reactions.
Reactants → Products + Heat
🔥 Key Point /
Exothermic = Heat is released
Exothermic = ऊष्मा बाहर निकलती है।

HEAT RELEASED /
3️⃣ Basic Concept /
Example 1 — Combustion of Methane
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O + Heat
Methane burns in oxygen and releases heat.
Example 2 — Respiration
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Energy
Respiration releases energy from glucose.
Example 3 — Burning of Coal
C + O₂ → CO₂ + Heat
Coal/carbon burns in oxygen and releases heat.

6️⃣ Fully Solved Example /
Question: Why is combustion of methane an exothermic reaction?
CBSE
Step 1:
Methane reacts with oxygen.
Step 3: Since heat is given out along with products, the reaction is called exothermic.
Answer: Methane combustion is an exothermic reaction because heat energy is released during the reaction.
