Corrosion is the gradual deterioration of metals due to reaction with substances in their environment, such as moisture, acids and gases present in the air. Iron corrodes to form a reddish-brown flaky substance called rust, a hydrated form of iron oxide. Unlike the protective oxide layer formed on metals like aluminium, rust does not stick firmly to the metal surface and flakes off, exposing fresh metal to further corrosion and eventually weakening the structure.
